  • This album surpasses anything they did in the studio. "Dark Star" is a psychedelic masterpiece where the interplay between the band is astounding, it's like it's raining colourful acidic notes. Jerry Garcia's guitar work is amazing, probably could have done without the singing though. If there's a weakness with the Dead it's their vocal abilities, and much have the music would be better as an instrumental (listen to the bonus track instrumental version of "Death Have No Mercy" on the CD issue of their début album), but not so with their fun rendition of Bobby Blue Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light", it's one of my favourite pieces of boogie music of all time. This album is a classic.
